Starting school is exciting for some children. For others, it's genuinely frightening.

A new building. New adults. New sounds. A routine they have never experienced before. And no reliable way to say "I'm not okay" or "I need a moment."

Most children can rely on words when they're overwhelmed. But in those first weeks, when everything is unfamiliar and the nervous system is already working hard, finding the right words in the right moment is often the first thing to go.

When a child cannot communicate what they need, the adults around them cannot help. This pack closes that gap before the first day begins.

The research on social stories and visual communication in early childhood settings is clear: when children know what to expect and have a way to signal what they need, their ability to engage and cope improves significantly. These tools put that knowledge directly in your hands.

Four tools in one pack

Every item is print ready. No laminator required, though the communication cards survive longer with one.

Item 1 of 4

My School Orientation Day

An 8-page illustrated social story that walks your child through their very first school visit. Arriving, meeting the teacher, the classroom, saying goodbye, what might happen during the day, and how it feels when the day is done. Read it together before orientation. Read it again the night before day one.

Item 2 of 4

Classroom Communication Cards

Ten printable cards your child hands to the teacher instead of trying to find words under pressure. I Need Help. I Need a Break. I Don't Understand. I Feel Worried. I Need the Toilet. It Is Too Noisy. Each card has a simple image and clear text. Cut out and keep in the school bag.

Item 3 of 4

My School Morning Routine

A 10-step visual sequence covering the full morning from waking up to being ready to walk out the door. Each step has a checkbox. Reduces the "are you ready yet?" back-and-forth and gives your child a concrete sequence to follow independently.

Item 4 of 4

My School Bag Checklist

A simple 6-item visual checklist for packing the night before or the morning of. Bag, lunchbox, drink bottle, hat, jumper or jacket. Builds independence and removes one source of morning anxiety for both child and parent.

The communication cards alone are worth the price. A child who can hand a card to their teacher and say nothing has been given something powerful: a way to be understood without having to perform composure they do not have.

10 cards. Every situation covered.

Designed to be cut out and kept in a small zip-lock bag in the school bag.

I Need Help
I Need a Break
I Don't Understand
I Feel Worried
It Is Too Noisy
I Need the Toilet
I Need a Drink
I Feel Sick
I Miss Mum or Dad
I'm Okay Now

Each card is numbered, colour coded, and illustrated. Print on cardstock or laminate for durability.

What changes when your child has these tools

Without this pack

  • Orientation day arrives with no preparation
  • Child is overwhelmed by the unfamiliar building and routine
  • Teacher does not know how your child communicates distress
  • Child cannot ask for a break without a meltdown
  • Morning routine requires adult direction for every step
  • Anxiety builds through the week as novelty compounds

With this pack

  • Child has seen and heard the school visit before it happens
  • Familiar story reduces the anxiety of the unknown
  • Teacher receives a clear communication tool on day one
  • Child can signal need without words or escalation
  • Morning checklist builds independence from week one
  • Both child and parent go into school feeling more prepared

Read it. Print it. Hand it over.

The social story works best when read together in the week before orientation day. Read it more than once. Let your child ask questions. Use it as a way to open conversation about what they are feeling about school starting.

The communication cards work best when introduced before they are needed. Show your child each card at home. Practise together. Let them hold the cards. Tell them: "When you feel this way at school, you can give this card to your teacher. You don't have to say anything."

The goal is not to remove all difficulty. It is to make sure your child has something to reach for when difficulty arrives.

The morning routine and bag checklist can go on the fridge, in the bedroom, or in the school bag. Some families laminate them so children can use a whiteboard marker to tick off each step and wipe it clean the next day.

Frequently asked

What age is this pack for?
Designed for children aged 4 to 7 starting Prep or Foundation. The social story and checklists suit most children in this age range. The communication cards can also be useful for children starting a new school later, or for children returning from a long break.
My child does not have a diagnosis. Is this still relevant?
Yes. These tools were created by paediatric occupational therapists and are useful for any child who finds transitions difficult, gets anxious about new environments, struggles to communicate under pressure, or benefits from knowing what to expect in advance. A diagnosis is not required.
Do I need to share anything with the school or teacher?
The communication cards work best when the teacher knows they exist. Before school starts, let the teacher or school support staff know your child may use cards to communicate how they are feeling. Most teachers welcome this kind of preparation. The cards are self-explanatory so no lengthy explanation is needed.
How do I print and use the cards?
Print on cardstock if possible, cut out each card, and ideally laminate them or place in a small clear zip-lock bag to keep in the school bag. If laminating is not practical, printing on thicker paper works fine. Each card has a small hole marker at the top so they can be kept on a ring if preferred.
What format does this come in?
PDF. You will receive an instant download link after purchase. You can print as many copies as you need, as many times as you need. There is no expiry on the file.
Is this available in a bundle?
Yes. This pack bundles with the Ready, Set, School! ebook for AU$34.95. The ebook covers the emotional and practical side of school readiness in depth, and this pack gives your child the tools to use on the day. Both together make a complete school readiness resource.
