Starting From Zero: Home Activities to Build Swimming Readiness in Autistic and Sensory Sensitive Children

Practical OT designed activities to build water tolerance, body awareness, and sensory readiness at home before your child sets foot in a pool.

"We spent six weeks doing these activities at bath time and in the backyard. By the time we got to the pool it already felt familiar. That preparation made all the difference."

Preparing for swimming lessons does not start at the pool

In my clinical work at EquipKids I always tell families the same thing: the pool is not where preparation begins. Home is. For autistic children and children with sensory differences, arriving at a pool without prior preparation means encountering every challenge at once. The noise, the water, the changing routine, the social demands. It is too much, too fast.

This guide gives you a structured set of home based activities across three areas: water tolerance, body awareness, and sensory practice. Each activity is designed to build a specific skill that transfers directly to the pool. They take five to ten minutes, use everyday household items, and can be woven into existing routines like bath time and backyard play.

By the time your child gets to the pool, none of it will feel completely new.

Three areas of home based swimming preparation

Water Tolerance Activities

Bubble blowing, pouring water on arms and face, splashing games. Builds comfort with water contact gradually in a familiar, low pressure setting before the pool is introduced.

Body Awareness and Strength

Floor floating, balancing on pillows, jumping games. Develops the core strength, balance, and body awareness that make learning swim strokes easier and safer.

Sensory Practice

Playing pool sounds at low volume, wearing goggles briefly at home, trying damp clothing. Prepares the senses for the pool environment before the added complexity of being in water.

More than just the activities

  • How to create a positive practice environment that reduces resistance
  • How to design a consistent weekly practice routine
  • How to track progress and celebrate small wins
  • How to troubleshoot refusal, inconsistent progress, and sensory overwhelm
  • How to prepare for the transition from home practice to actual pool lessons

What parents ask

How do I prepare an autistic child for swimming lessons at home?
This guide covers exactly that. The most effective preparation happens in short, frequent sessions using familiar environments like bath time and the backyard. Key areas to work on are water tolerance, body awareness, sensory familiarity with pool equipment like goggles, and regulation skills like waiting and following simple instructions. This guide gives you structured activities across all of these areas.
How long should I spend on home preparation before starting lessons?
There is no set timeframe. Some children are ready for lessons after a few weeks of home preparation. Others benefit from months of gradual work before the pool is introduced. The Is My Child Ready checklist is a useful companion to this guide as it helps you assess when your child has the foundational readiness to benefit from lessons.
How do I receive it?
Instantly after purchase you will receive a download link by email. PDF format, works on any device. Print it or keep it on your phone for easy reference during practice sessions.
